A Professional Organizer is someone who provides information, products, and assistance to help individuals and businesses achieve their specific organizing needs. A Professional Organizer offers both consulting as well as hands-on organizing services, giving you the skills and tools you need to overcome that awful feeling of being overwhelmed.
As one of Canada’s first Professional Organizers, Elaine Jermy, Owner of Organized Solutions, is a leader in the field of organizing. She is a Founder and Member of Professional Organizers in Canada (POC), whose members offer:
- Guidance, encouragement and education to help reduce your stress and gain control.
- A supportive approach where the Professional Organizer actively listens to your needs.
- Focus and direction to address your organizational challenges.
- A non-judgemental mindset that is focused on helping to reduce your stress.
- Extreme dedication with the goal of helping you do more in less time, with more energy.
- A commitment to professional excellence and adherence to POC’s strict code of ethics.
Like other professionals, many organizers have an area of specialization, and bring different levels of expertise, certifications and skills to the table. They also have varying degrees of experience. When looking for a Professional Organizer, it’s important to factor in their experience, expertise and any specialties they offer. The three broad service areas of professional organizing are Home, Small & Home Office and Corporate Organizing.
Within those broader areas, Professional Organizers may offer a variety of services: time management, paper management, clutter control, chronic disorganization, behaviour modification, space planning, filing, organizing coaching, wardrobes, closet systems, event planning, errands, personal shopping, financial management, downsizing, packing/moving, records management, and so much more. Some professional organizers work with specific populations such as, seniors, children, students, and people with ADD, hoarding issues or who are chronically disorganized. Some organizers specialize in specific niche professions such as healthcare/medical or legal offices. Others offer products, seminars, and workshops on organizing or targeting a specific organizing subject.
A cleaning service will come into your home or office and clean it from top to bottom. But a professional organizer gets to the root of the issue and then creates a plan to help you put the processes and systems in place to keep your home or office organized.
In other words, when you hire a Professional Organizer, you will have the skills in place to keep your home or office organized and tidy.
When organizing, we use our 5-Step Organizing Process:
STEP 1: ASSESS YOUR NEEDS. The first step to getting organized is to assess your situation, either by phone or in-person. During our first meeting, we will walk through your space, identify your specific challenges and develop a prioritized plan.
STEP 2: SORT & REDUCE. Working together with you, we will focus on one area, one item at a time, until the entire space has been cleared. We will ask the right questions and provide suggestions to help you make decisions.
STEP 3: STORE. We will help you to select and install functional storage solutions including shelving, tote bins and baskets. We’ll always work with what you have before purchasing extra supplies.
STEP 4: LABEL. Clear labelling is the key to easy storage and retrieval.
STEP 5: MAINTAIN. Staying organized is a continuous journey, not a final destination. Regular maintenance sessions will keep your space in order and ensure that existing systems continue to meet your needs.
The time it takes to finish the organizing process depends on a number of variables including: the level of accumulation, the size of the space, how quickly you make decisions and how much “homework” is completed between sessions. Often, clients book weekly sessions to ensure that momentum is not lost. For large projects or those with tight deadlines, we can quickly assemble a team.
It is important to keep in mind that a Professional Organizer’s rate is based on a variety of factors including: years of experience, certifications and training, area of expertise, geographic location and travel required. While pricing may be a consideration when choosing a Professional Organizer, it should never be the sole criterion for making a final decision. Experience, expertise and a good fit are all important considerations.
